    Walk to the outdoor disconnect and look at the line-set where it enters the wall sleeve. The foam should be uncracked, fully covering the copper, and ideally extended another 6" past the wall into the conditioned space. Slit or missing insulation at exactly this point is the most common cause of a lineset freeze-off.

    Cap or wrap the outdoor disconnect box

    A plastic bag, a small weatherproof cover, or a dedicated disconnect hood keeps driving rain and freezing fog out of the pull-out handle and the fuse holder. Do NOT cover the coils themselves — that traps moisture and accelerates corrosion. The breaker is the single point that isolates the system; keep it dry, do not insulate it.

    Run a final cooling cycle, then a final fan-only cycle

    About 6–8 hours before the forecast low, run the AC on a normal cooling call for 5–8 minutes so the evaporator and condensate drain clear out. Then move the thermostat to FAN-ONLY for an additional 3–5 minutes to burn off surface moisture on the coil and the secondary drip pan. You want the indoor side going into the freeze as dry as you can get it.

    Bump the thermostat above the freeze threshold

    Set the thermostat 4–6°F above your normal daytime setpoint for the duration of the freeze event — typically 75–78°F. The system is not off; it is just not over-cycling through the coldest overnight hours. A unit that cycles through the cold night at 70°F is much harder on the compressor than one that holds 76°F.

    For a South Louisiana system without a heat-tape on the condensate line, the cheapest pre-freeze insurance is to pour 8–12 oz of warm (not boiling) distilled water down the indoor condensate line the afternoon before the freeze.     Lock out at the breaker ONLY if you are leaving town

    Locking the whole system out means the breaker flips OFF and stays OFF for the duration. That is the right move for a homeowner who is leaving for the freeze and who has a non-condensing heat source for the house. For everyone else, the right call is to keep the system holding 75–78°F overnight and let it cycle — the freeze-trigger zone is small when the indoor is at setpoint.

    Walk the perimeter of the condenser. Look for: bent or flattened fins at the inlet ring, cabinet bulges or dents that were not there before the freeze, sheet-metal cracks at the corner seams, and any sign that the bottom of the coil has standing water or ice still on it.     After the thaw, give the condensate line 6–8 minutes of observation. Pour 8–12 oz of warm distilled water down the indoor access — if it bubbles up at the outdoor outlet, the line is clear; if it backs up, the line is still frozen or slow-clearing. Do not add refrigerant-side pressure to the system until this is verified.

    Check the secondary drip pan under the air handler

    Open the air handler access and look at the secondary drip pan. Standing water, slime, or an off smell here indicates the condensate line was already slow before the freeze — and it is the single biggest precondition for mold growth in the air handler itself. Empty the pan, dry it, and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar down the primary line.

    A filter that ran through a hard freeze pulled in moisture, dust, and possibly combustion byproducts if you ran a space heater. Pull the old one out, bag it, and install a clean replacement.     Flip the breaker back ON (last, never first), set the thermostat to FAN-ONLY for 2–3 minutes — listen for clean operation. Then move to a low-cool call (78° setpoint, not 72°) for the first 30 minutes.
